Insalata Caprese – Traditional Italian Mozzarella, Tomato, and Basil Salad
Originating from the island of Capri and spreading across the world, this is the simplest and most elegant salad in Italian cuisine. The harmony of ripe tomato slices, fresh buffalo mozzarella, and basil leaves is completed with only good olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Built on the quality of three essential ingredients, this classic is an indispensable part of Italian summer tables.

Step 01
Wash the tomatoes and remove the stems. Cut into round slices approximately 7-8 mm thick. Drain the mozzarella from its brine and slice it to the same thickness. It is important that both ingredients are at room temperature to allow the flavors to come through.
02
Step 02
Arrange the tomato and mozzarella slices alternately in a circle on a wide, flat serving plate, overlapping them slightly. Follow a regular pattern so the colors (red-white-green) are visible.
03
Step 03
Place fresh basil leaves between and on top of the arranged slices. Leave the leaves whole without tearing them; this preserves both the visual integrity and the aroma.
04
Step 04
Drizzle extra-virgin olive oil in a thin stream over the salad. Finally, sprinkle with coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve immediately at room temperature.
