Place the yellow split peas in a bowl, cover with plenty of cold water, and soak overnight (at least 8 hours). The next day, drain and rinse.
Cut the smoked pork into bite-sized pieces. Peel and finely dice the onion. Peel and slice the carrots. Peel the potatoes and celeriac and cut into even dice. Trim the leek and slice into rings.
Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Sauté the diced onion until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the carrot slices and diced celeriac and cook briefly.
Add the soaked peas to the pot and pour in the water. Add the bay leaves. Nestle in the smoked pork. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer over low heat, partially covered, for about 45 minutes.
Add the diced potatoes and leek rings to the stew. Continue to simmer over low heat for another 20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking to the bottom of the pot.
Remove the pork from the pot, pull the meat off the bones, and shred into pieces. Return to the stew. Season with salt, pepper, and marjoram. Remove the bay leaves.
